The material flows in and around the pipe from the bottom up as the auger rotates into the windrowed spoil which is either trencher or excavator dug. The material is pulverized allowing the fines to enter the trench first with the heavier rocks riding up and entering after the pipe has been entombed and protected. US Federal back filling requirements require pipelines to be fully supported and done in a manner that protects any pipe coating. The auger backfiller satisfies these specifications.
